MLCC internal delamination is one of the hidden failure modes that cannot be easily spotted by visual inspection. Unlike surface cracks, delamination occurs inside the ceramic dielectric layer or at the interface between ceramic and inner electrode. It may not cause immediate short circuit, but gradually degrades capacitance and triggers intermittent failure under thermal cycling or vibration, bringing huge risks to automotive, industrial control and energy storage equipment.
Multilayer ceramic capacitors are stacked by dozens or hundreds of dielectric layers and metal inner electrodes, co-fired at high temperature. Internal delamination refers to layer separation inside the MLCC chip. The separation gap appears between ceramic dielectric and internal electrode layers.
Minor delamination may only reduce effective capacitance. Severe delamination will expand under temperature change and mechanical stress, develop into penetrating cracks, and finally cause insulation drop or short-circuit failure.
Unmatched shrinkage rate between ceramic powder and inner electrode paste during sintering, producing residual internal stress.
Contamination, voids or uneven thickness in green tape before stacking.
Improper sintering temperature, heating/cooling speed, leading to uneven thermal stress inside chip.
Rapid temperature rise and cooling in reflow process creates thermal expansion mismatch. If the temperature curve exceeds component specification, internal stress will pull apart dielectric layers, inducing delamination. Large size and high capacitance MLCC are more sensitive.
PCB bending, twisting or pressure during assembly creates bending stress transmitted to MLCC body. Even soft visual appearance may produce internal layer separation, especially MLCC mounted near edge or connector area of PCB.
Repeated temperature swing in end product expands tiny internal defects step by step. After hundreds or thousands of thermal cycles, initial micro delamination grows and becomes functional failure, which is common for AEC-Q200 automotive grade MLCC applications.
Cross-section Microscopy: Physical cutting and polishing, observe internal layers under metallurgical microscope, classic failure analysis method.
Scanning Acoustic Microscopy (SAM / C-SAM): Non-destructive inspection, widely used for quality screening, detect internal void and delamination without destroying samples.
Electrical parameter screening: Capacitance drop, increased dissipation factor and insulation resistance degradation are typical warning signs.
